Srinagar: Reports said on Wednesday that an investigation report of the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Crime Branch has indicted state Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed for helping his son pass the Board examination in 2009 using unfair means. 

While the Crime Branch would submit the report today, its contents leaked to the media stated Sayeed’s son was assisted in clearing class ten Board exams of more than two subjects in 2009. 
The report also goes on to say that officials of both the Board and Education departments were involved in the scandal. 

In the most damning revelation, the report says the minister’s son, Imam Sauban’s Urdu and Maths papers were written by a senior education department official. 
It has also been established that prior to the exams, the Board allowed Imam Sauban’s migration from one examination to another favourable one

 

Almost too big to handle, Chun Chun weighs in at just over seven kilograms or 15 and a half pounds - possibly the biggest baby ever born in China.

His father Han Jingang is very pleased his son arrived in the Year of the Dragon - an auspicious time to have a child.

"My wife was not different from other pregnant women. She ate and drank normally. But she's given birth to such a big, fat son. Today is the first day of spring in the Chinese calendar and he's a 'dragon baby'. I'm very happy."

Mother Wang Yujuan says the couple's 6-year-old daughter weighed just over 4 kilograms at birth, so she was not expecting such an enormous child.

"I felt that my body was clumsier than when I had been pregnant with my daughter. My belly was bigger than it was then. I guessed the baby would be between 4.5 and 5 kilos. I never expected to hear that he weighs 7 kilos."

And though he's not the largest baby ever born, Chun Chun will almost certainly have a big future ahead.

On the face of it, she is no different from other children her age – she loves riding her bicycle, watching cartoons and playing her favourite games. But K. Vishalini of Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli isn’t your average 11-year-old.

Blessed with exceptional IQ, the Standard 8 student is an IT whiz kid who can come up with solutions to the trickiest of technical problems. Yes, she spends three hours a day learning about computers. But that is no big deal.

Vishalini has just returned home from an international seminar held at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Mangalore, where she was a special guest. Such invitations are pretty routine for her these days.

Her syllabus has been wrapped up well in advance. So this child prodigy has the time to visit engineering colleges to deliver lectures to B.E. and B.Tech students on the intricacies of computer science.

At seminars, many an IT expert has been foxed by this chit of a girl who has answers to complex questions.

Her amazing achievements include cracking the Microsoft Certified Professional and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) courses with ease.

Vishalini’s IQ is around 225. It is higher than that of the Guinness record holder, Kim Ung-Yong, whose IQ is around 210.

“She did not find a place in the Guinness Book because the minimum age requirement is 14 years,” says her electrician-father, Kumarasamy.

Vishalini’s mother, Ragamaliga, and the girl herself had to struggle to tide over a speech impairment that the latter suffered from as a small child. Today, Vishalini is a wonder girl that her parents can be immensely proud of.

Both NITK of Mangalore and Kalasalingam Engineering College are now more than ready to welcome Vishalini. But her parents want the girl to enjoy her childhood for the next three years before thinking of entering a college campus.

Students from Mizoram who are studying in Pune have decided to give something back to the city. On February 3, the Mizo Students' Union (MSUP), a 300-member strong organisation formed in 1968 held a blood donation camp at Sahyadri Hospital, Karve Road. Forty-six students, including three girls participated in the camp.

Jacob Khiangte aka cobby_cobster of lawrkhawm.com, President, MSUP, told Pune Mirror, “Pune has done a lot for us, and we wanted to give something back. After a lot of discussion and advice from our seniors, we thought this was the best way to return the favour.”

He added, “If we look at Mizoram, we can see that most of the prominent businessmen, politicians, officers and popular citizens have done their graduation from Pune University. So, we just want to say ‘thank you’ to this great city, which has done a lot for Mizo society as a whole and we are glad that this opportunity came.”

This initiative comes two years after Mizo students had a minor tiff with the Pune police. Eleven Mizo students were held after a dispute between two groups. “That incident created a negative image of us. We want to shed that image and this was our way of doing the same,” Khiangte said.

CID arrested additional secretary Debaditya Chakraborty last Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a Rs. 125 crore scam, the first time such a senior IAS officer has been arrested in the state. R M Jamir from Nagaland, a retired IAS officer who was the director of a PSU at the centre of the scam, has also been held. The arrests were confirmed by DIG, CID (operations) K Jayaraman.

Jamir was director general of the West Bengal Essential Commodities Services Corporation (WBECSC) and Chakraborty its managing director. The PSU was entrusted with the export of iron ore to a Chinese firm in a joint venture with Bharat Inmate, a private exporter. In the subsequent fiasco, the PSU suffered a loss of Rs. 125 crore.

After a change of guard in the state, the case gathered steam. Food and essential services minister Jyotipriya Mullick accused Kolkata Police of hushing up the case to protect some influential officers. After chief minister Mamata Banerjee intervened, the CID took over and, in July 2011, initiated a fresh probe against the Singapore-based owners of the ship that carried the iron ore – Sea Quest Shipping Pvt Limited. CID officers called both Jamir and Chakraborty to their headquarters and arrested them, February 2. CID officers hinted that they found the involvement of more officials and they could be arrested, too.

The Mizoram government will announce steps to tackle wildfire triggered by the slash and burn method of farming, popularly called jhum, during late winter and early summer in the state. Sources said in Aizawl, the state-level fire prevention committee, under the chairmanship of chief minister Lalthanhawla, has set March 15 as the deadline for the farmers to complete the jhum process of burning the fallow and dry fields.

Statistics showed that Mizoram produces 1,40,503 tonnes of rice, mainly from jhum cultivation, which is inadequate to meet the domestic demand. The state has to depend on monthly ration from the Centre. The state government has now launched a Rs 2,289-crore scheme for farmers to shun jhum cultivation, to grow paddy the modern way and also encourage them to produce cash-spinning commercial crops like sunflower.

Forest department sources in Aizawl said between December 2010 and May 2011, as many as 58 wildfires had destroyed 1,260 hectares of the forestland, leading to a loss of Rs 1.66 crore.
